Haskap Berries FAQ

What are Haskap berries?

Haskap berries are elongated to oval shaped berries, which belong to the blue honeysuckle family. The berries are smooth skinned and dark blue to blue-black in colour. When ripe their flesh is an intense crimson, and has a sweet tart flavour depending on the variety.

 


 

Where does this berry come from?

The plant is believed to have first originated in Siberia. It's seeds carried by migrating birds to northern Japan, helped establish the first Haskap berry industry there.

 


 

It is only another berry, so what is all the fuss about?

This berry is incredibly nutritious with three times the antioxidant levels found in blueberries, and high levels of anthocyanins and vitamin C. Scientific research is looking at the potential health benefits associated with this berry.

 


 

Ok so the berry is tasty and nutritious, but is how you grow them safe to the consumer and the environment?

At Gryphon Hill Farms, we do not use pesticides and herbicides on our orchard. Weeding is done by hand or mechanical means. The health of the soil and Haskap plants is tended using a combination of natural methods and organic products and supplements.
